36 quarter credit units/ 720 clock hours
36 weeks (20 hours a week) evenings
30 weeks (24 hours a week) mornings
Objective:
The course objective is to provide students with language proficiency to enable them to successfully compete
in the English-speaking job market.
During the first segment of the program, the goal is to achieve basic communicative competence, and to function adequately in each of the four language areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Emphasis is on the development of cultural awareness and on the linguistic survival skills students need in their daily interaction with the English-speaking world. As the program develops, specific vocational materials relating to students’ chosen careers replace some of the more generalized ESL texts used in the first part of the course, and the emphasis of the program turns to the development of employment-related language competencies.
