American Red Cross Blood Drive Wrap Up
From 10 AM-4 PM in the Gen Ed Room on the 4th Floor the entire school family gave blood. Donations are used for transfusions, platelets, and other patients through the American Red Cross,. On January 11th, an appointment sign- up sheet circulated the school. All slots were full by the next day thanks to the generous school.
Blood Drive Facts
About a pint of blood was collected from each donor after health history and mini physicals were completed,. Here’s what happens after you give blood.
- The American Red Cross distributes and ships donations when processing and testing are done. They deliver to hospitals 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
- Right now, blood is being distributed faster than it’s coming in.
- Since processed and tested red cell donations only last 42 days, platelets 5 days, and plasma up to a year, it is important for those who can donate to give what they can.
- Blood and platelets cannot be manufactured, which is why those in need depend on volunteers.
CBD Breaking Records
In the US alone, someone needs blood every two seconds. However, less than 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood or platelets, including the 7% of Americans who have the universal blood type– O negative. By donating blood, patrons can help save up to 3 lives. Red cells are used for anemic patients who may need a red cell transfusion. White platelets, also found in the blood, are used on cancer patients as they cannot make their own. Additionally, plasma is also used for clotting and to control bleeding. All together, CBD College donated 21 pints of blood, once again breaking their school record and raising the bar higher for next year.
