CBD College Celebrates National Surgical Technologists Week!

This September, CBD College celebrates Surgical Technologist Week from the 17th thru the 23rd.  In 1984, the Association of Surgical Technologists Board of Directors dedicated the third week in September to recognize the Surgical Technologist profession. National Surgical Technologists Week has been celebrated every year since and has become a national phenomenon.   As we wrap up this week, note a few of our favorite surgeons and innovators in the field.

 

John Heysham Gibbon

 

Born: 1903

Died: 1973

Origin:   Pennsylvannia, USA

 

One of the most famous surgeons in history is John Heysham Gibbon. Gibbon was born in 1903 and died in 1973. Gibbon followed in the footsteps of a long line of medical doctors. He was known for the invention of the heart-lung machine, and for being the first to perform open-heart surgery. Gibbon also served in World War II, as well as being a well-known surgeon.

Joseph Lister

 

Born: :  1827

Died: 1912

Origin:  Walmer, United Kingdom

 

One of the biggest advancements in the history of surgery was the introduction of sterility to medicine. While many thought that “bad air” caused of infection, Joseph Lister observed that other issues may be at work. He introduced the idea of sterilizing surgical instruments with carbolic acid (which is now referred to as phenol), as well as using antiseptics to clean wounds.

Dr. David Altchek

 

Born: : 1958

Origin:  New York, USA

 

Dr . David Altchek has pioneered sports medicine while treating top professional athletes from around the country. He is an attending orthopedic surgeon and co-chief in the Sports Medicine & Shoulder Service at Hospital for Special Surgery, professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College, the medical director for the New York Mets and a medical consultant for the NBA. He has won several awards for his work in one of the fastest-growing fields in orthopedics.

Dr. James Andrews

 

Born:  1942

Origin:  Louisiana, USA

 

Dr. James Andrews is an orthopedic surgeon who practices at the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. He also practices at the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Florida. The United States considers Andrews the “most valuable doctor in sports,” and remains one of the foremost surgeons for knee, elbow, and shoulder injuries.
